In the early 1990s, General Motors built the world's last true Station Wagon. And the wagon went out in style, as the top-of-the-line Buick Roadmaster Estate. Featuring leather interior, a moonroof, a figured walnut dashboard, a rear-facing third row seat, and power everything -- the station wagon had its last word. We've had this since new in 1993, and when my grandfather bought it, we never thought it would one day be a collector's item!
Not thinking much about it, we took the wagon to the beach, the racetrack, and the occasional carshow. It was fun to load up with 7 or 8 people and just "go". Little did we know we were enjoying the station wagon the same way generations before us had done... generations who had grown up with this American icon.
The last year it happened. A gentleman called me up, and here's what he said:
You are going to think I'm crazy, but I've called every limousine company in town -- and then I found you. I... My son... needs an old station wagon. You see, he's getting married this weekend at Mountain Brook Club, and his bride-to-be grew up in the 80s with a wood-grained station wagon. He thinks it would be great if they could ride away from their wedding in one."
"Well, sir, we just happen to have one." I said, having never thought about using it for weddings.
And she loved it! Just look at her face. Once I got the photos from the photographers (Thanks Bryan Johnson and later, David Shirk!) I put "The Barge" here on our website, and it's been used several times since. What a great way to be different.
