Buick Roadmaster "Woody" Wagon
Icon for a Generation
In the early 1990s, General Motors built the world’s last true American station wagon — and it went out in style as the top-of-the-line Buick Roadmaster Estate. Leather interior, moonroof, figured walnut dashboard, rear-facing third-row seat, and power everything. This was the station wagon’s final, confident statement. We’ve had this one since new, and when our grandfather bought it, none of us imagined it would someday become a collectible — or a wedding car.
Affectionately known in our family as “The Barge,” the Roadmaster hauled us to the beach, the racetrack, and the occasional car show. We loaded up seven or eight people at a time and simply went. Only later did we realize we were enjoying the station wagon the same way generations before us had — growing up with one of America’s most familiar and beloved icons.
Then, some time back, we received a call:
“You’re probably going to think I’m crazy, but I’ve called every limousine company in town — and then I found you. My son is getting married this weekend at Mountain Brook Club. His bride grew up with a wood-grained station wagon… and he thinks it would be perfect if they could ride away from their wedding in one.”
“Well,” we said, having never once considered it, “we just happen to have one.”
She loved it. Just look at her face. Once we saw the photographs, “The Barge” earned her place on our website — and she’s been part of many joyful departures ever since.
Sometimes, the most unforgettable choice is simply the one that feels like home.
